Competition Adjudication

Competition, as a band or individually, is the way to test skills and abilities. It is the way to receive constructive feedback while being compared to musical peers. The tradition of bands and soloists competing dates back to military pipe bands and still thrives in pipe band communities through the world to this day. At the core of competition is the panel of judges - listening, watching, writing and deciding the outcome.

We are proud to present our founder, Andrew Hoinacki, as an available adjudicator for competition. His judging career started very young at 19, but he has quickly become a highly respected judge throughout North America. Andrew's initial accreditation as a judge came from the Midwest Pipe Band Association. Beginning as an apprentice and moving quickly to Associate Judge status, he was named to the MWPBA Senior Panel in 2001. His standard credential for Solo Snare and Band Drumming was quickly followed by the addition of qualifications for Solo Tenor and Band Ensemble. By 2002, Andrew was a fully qualified MWPBA Senior Judge for all grades of solo, band and ensemble competition.

Andrew moved to California in 2004, and became recognized by the Western United States Pipe Band Association (WUSPBA) for all levels of qualification as well. He was also honored to accept a request to participate as a mentor judge for WUSPBA's apprenticing program. Furthering his credential in the Spring of 2005, he took and passed the first WUSPBA Adjudicator Examination for Band and Solo Drumming. Andrew is a member of WUSPBA "A" Panel for solo snare, solo bass and tenor, band drumming and band ensemble judging.

Andrew is often regarded as tough but fair, and always constructive and informative. He travels throughout North America judging at all levels of competition. He has judged in the MWPBA, WUSPBA, Eastern US Pipe Band Association (EUSPBA), and the British Columbia Pipers Association (BCPA).

The fees for judging services start at $250 per day for solo and band judging. If you only require solo judging service, the fee is $100. Expenses and arrangements for travel, accommodation, and meals are always considered the responsibility of the contest organizers.
