Jarrod began drumming when he was 12 years old and quickly learned basic drum rudiments. He competed in numerous rudimental snare drum competitions and was very successful. He began playing Scottish style drumming at about the same age. He had some private lessons with J. Reid Maxwell early in his career. Also early in his career, he began learning to play from veteran Shott's drummer Carl Lenny and quickly built his large chops which can be easily seen. He learned that through hard work and chop building, along with the proper tuition and instruction, a truly worthwhile drummer can be forged through diligent practice.

Jarrod led the KC Saint Andrews Pipe Band from 2000 to 2004. During that time, the band improved to Grade 2 and was successful. He also helped write scores and teach the Lyon College Pipe Band shortly before they took 2nd in grade 3 at World Championships using his scores. Jarrod has competed in grade 2 and 1 snare drumming and has numerous medals for winning 1st prize. He currently competes in professional grade snare drumming and has been successful in this grade. Jarrod is currently not playing with a band and prefers to teach beginning drummers basic rudiments the correct way. Jarrod still writes scores for bands and enjoys teaching drummers who truly want to learn Scottish drumming the way it is supposed to be played.
